A tornado is an unpredictable force of nature, one which often hits without giving people the chance to prepare. Since they are moving fast and they are so dangerous and impossible to predict in advance, being prepared for one is a must for any family. A number of steps detailed below should be taken in advance by each family, before the tornado season begins.
The first thing to keep in mind is that you should know the location of all tornado shelters in the area. You should know where tornado shelters are located in the areas that you frequent for various reasons. Whether it’s the kids school, the place where you work, your home, you should always know what’s the nearest tornado shelter where you can take refuge. Finding a tornado shelter when the sirens are announcing that a tornado is minutes away is a recipe for disaster. Don’t leave this important preparation step to the last minute. Research everything in advance. You can even keep a map with the shelters in your city in one of your pockets, in case you need it.
Whenever the sirens start, the family should know what they have to do. Try doing a few tests with them, to get the accustomed with what they need to do in the event of a tornado. The family members should know what to do if they’re alone at home and the tornado warning begins. They should know where they are safe and where they shouldn’t be and they should know how to use the survival pack you make for them.
Another thing to do while you’re preparing for the tornado season is to check out the tornado insurance and make sure it’s in order. Even if it can be a bit expensive, it’s worth it in case you need it at some point.
